Essays in the Aesthetics of Sport is a scholarly collection that consolidates the aesthetics of sport as a rigorous field of inquiry, irreducible to the celebratory rhetoric of the “beautiful gesture” or to purely technical accounts of performance. Across its contributions, the volume argues that sport generates meaning through embodied events that are at once rule-governed and radically contingent: actions become aesthetically salient not simply because they display grace or efficiency, but because they appear as intelligible forms—figures of effort, risk, mastery, vulnerability, belonging—within historically and socially situated “competences of looking.” In this sense, the book treats sporting experience as a cultural and educational phenomenon: what is admired, narrated, remembered, and shared in sport is shaped by interpretive communities, media devices, and normative frameworks, all of which participate in the production of value.
