In this paper we will argue that democracy is historically linked to citizenship and its rights. From sport, democracy has derived three rights which embody its essence: mainly, equality; right to participate; right to be considered as a person and be awarded on the basis of one’s own competences and merits. The rights of democracy can be achieved through sport, which is a human capital. For this reason, in conclusion, we will stress the importance of enhancing participation in sport as a key factor for developing and spreading the values of democracy and citizenship in our society.

Abstract
In this paper we will argue that democracy is historically linked to citizenship and its rights. From sport, democracy has derived three rights which embody its essence: mainly, equality; right to participate; right to be considered as a person and be awarded on the basis of one’s own competences and merits. The rights of democracy can be achieved through sport, which is a human capital. For this reason, in conclusion, we will stress the importance of enhancing participation in sport as a key factor for developing and spreading the values of democracy and citizenship in our society.File in questo prodotto:
