The Italian demographic data show that 59,236,213 people lived in Italy on 1 January 2021, 27,486,438 of which in the northern macro-area (46.4% of the total), 11,786,952 in the central one (19.9%) and 19,962,823 in the southern (33.7%) (table 1). The constant ageing of this country is made clearer by the data about the age structure of the population which is, in fact, for 63.6% made up of 15-64 years old (37,658,137), for 23.5% by over 64 (11,592,335) and just by 12.9% by under 15 (7,636,545) (table 1). The incidence of the elderly in Italy places the country at the top of the world ranking and at the top of the European context.
