The aim of this study is to show how to integrate a traditional bilingual collection of sports terminology (Sager: 1997) into a larger, robust, multimedia system: an ontology in the sports domain. To construct an "ontology of sport" prototype, the terminological approach used for collecting the bilingual terminological glossary of Italian and English sports language was integrated by applying a logical-ontological theoretical model. This “SportTerm” prototype model is part of a pilot project of the University of Rome “Foro Italico”. It is designed to create an ontology in the domain of sport that will systematize and implement the existing terminological collection. In this paper we intend to include: corpus, traditional terminology processing, new ontological developments and a model for a sport ontology. We will also examine criteria for the creation of a multimedia archive of images and videos that could be used to represent terms/concepts implying the notion of movement. Although there are many different possible models, approaches and methods of investigation, this study attempts to integrate: 1) the derivation of an ontology from the taxonomy and collection of existing data (Guarino, Welty 2000); 2) the application of the logical-ontological model (Poli: 2002, Liang, Lauser, Sini: 2006). Therefore, analysis will proceed in two directions: a) selection of a crucial sub-domain characterized by complex, multi-faceted and multi-layer concepts that are to be represented and b) definition of criteria for supporting concept/term representation through the use of multimedia. From an applicative point of view, the creation of an “ontology of sport” not only promotes the knowledge and learning of key concepts in a specific field of study, but it also enables us to focus on the characteristics and relationships among specific concepts. The use of pictures and videos facilitates understanding and an in-depth knowledge of the specific terminology of a given domain, especially in a cross-cultural perspective. The prototype model we propose can provide associations between multimedia and lexical data and can also be used on-line as a possible reference resource for supporting language learning for specific purposes (ESP).
